Here is a number you will not hear at most tech conferences: 30 percent. That is the share of Americans over 50 who reported using generative artificial intelligence (AI) by late 2025, according to AARP research.
Compare that to 18 percent in 2024 and just 9 percent in 2023.
The curve is not flat. It is not a slow crawl. In two years, use of generative AI among people 50-plus more than tripled. If those numbers described a startup's user growth, investors would call it hockey-stick adoption.
Yet the public conversation still treats AI adoption as a young person's game. Headlines about "AI natives" and "digital fluency" imply that anyone over 50 missed the boat. The data says the opposite. You are not late to this trend. You are the trend.
What changed? Three things.
First, free tiers. You do not need a credit card or a subscription to try ChatGPT, Claude, or Google Gemini. The barrier to entry is zero dollars. That matters for a demographic that is understandably cautious about paying for something they are still evaluating.
Second, voice interfaces. The first generation of AI tools required typing prompts into a text box. That felt like learning a new keyboard shortcut for everything. Now you can talk to these tools. Say "What is this rash on my arm?" or "Remind me to pick up my prescription tomorrow." The friction disappeared.
Third, simplified tools. Early AI products were built by engineers for engineers. The 2025 and 2026 versions were built for everyone. Apps like ChatGPT now open to a blank question box with no intimidating settings. You ask, it answers. That is the whole experience.
The practical effect is real. People over 50 are using AI for health research, trip planning, writing help, and even estate planning documents. AARP found that those who have tried AI once are far more likely to use it again. The gap between curiosity and action is closing fast.
So where does that leave you?
If you have not tried an AI tool yet, you are in good company. Nearly 7 in 10 people over 50 have not taken the step either. But the window where you can say "I am just waiting to see how this plays out" is closing.

You have now joined the 30 percent. And next year, when that number is 45 or 50, you will already know what all the fuss is about.
