Breaking Down Technology Byte By Byte

About

Hey, I'm Garrett

I'm the person behind The Complex Bytes. This is the place where I break down technology so it actually makes sense — whether you work in IT or you just have to make decisions about it.

I've spent 27 years in technology. Not as a talking head. Not as someone who writes about it from the outside. I've been in the rooms where the hard decisions get made — the 2 AM system failures, the auditor inspections, the budget meetings where you have to justify every dollar. And I've been on the sales side too, helping organizations figure out what they actually need versus what vendors are pushing.

That mix is what makes this site different. I'm not here to impress you with jargon. I'm here to save you time, cut through the noise, and give you the straight story.

Who this is for

Two kinds of people end up here, and both are welcome:

Technology professionals — IT folks, cybersecurity people, government contractors, managers, consultants, and business owners who are drowning in information. You know enough to be dangerous. You need clarity to make a decision and move forward.

Technology consumers — professionals and business owners who use technology every day but don't speak the language. You buy software, manage teams, make purchasing decisions. Tech speaks a dialect you were never taught, and most explanations make you feel like you should already know it.

Both of you hit the same wall from different directions: complexity without a translator. That's exactly where The Complex Bytes lives.

How I got here

First, I ran the technology. Seventeen years in IT — from building departments from scratch to serving as VP and Information Systems Security Officer. I managed big infrastructure programs, led federal security authorization processes, and kept the lights on through compliance audits. The kind of work where if something broke at 2 AM, it was my phone that rang.

Then, I sold it. In 2019 I moved into enterprise sales, taking that technical experience and applying it to helping organizations solve real problems. Today I lead federal public sector sales for a Fortune 500 company — security, networking, cloud. I've been at this long enough to know what works and what's just marketing fluff.

Now, I'm building. The Complex Bytes is my way of putting everything I've learned into something useful — articles, courses, tools, and honest takes on where technology is heading. I also run FusionBridge Solutions, a government contracting company built around CMMC compliance. And yes, I practice what I preach: every piece of content on this site runs through an AI agent system I designed and operate on hardware I own. Not because it's trendy — because owning your infrastructure is the whole point.

What I believe

Four things that drive everything on this site:

Own your data. If I can self-host it and it makes operational sense, I do. Control your data, control your options.

Compliance is an advantage, not a burden. The businesses that treat security standards like CMMC and NIST as strategy will outperform the ones that treat them as paperwork. I've seen it play out.

AI amplifies people. It doesn't replace them. AI is a powerful tool, but it doesn't replace judgment, relationships, or real-world experience. Anyone selling you "AI replaces everything" is selling you something.

Build honestly, in public. I'm showing the real road from corporate executive to independent builder. The costs, the mistakes, the things that didn't work. No "quit your job and follow your dreams" fantasy — just the truth.

Why "The Complex Bytes"

Technology is complicated. That's not changing anytime soon. But here's the thing — complexity, when it's explained well, becomes power. One small, clear, useful piece at a time.

That's what this site is. Byte by byte.
